Vitiligo is an autoimmune disorder which is influenced greatly by hormonal changes. As the pregnancy is associated with extensive hormonal changes in the body, it is seen that sometimes vitiligo appears all of a sudden during pregnancy.
Surprisingly, the reverse pattern is also seen by Dr. Rajesh Shah, MD, during his practice as a homeopathic consultant at Life Force in last 30 years. The patients of vitiligo can see the disappearance of patches during pregnancy.
Is homeopathic treatment safe in pregnancy?
If the patient is a known case of vitiligo and is already under homeopathic treatment, then the treatment can be safely continued throughout the pregnancy. Dr Rajesh Shah advises not to start homeopathic treatment in a new patient who is pregnant and has not taken homeopathic treatment for the disease so far.
But, broadly speaking, the homeopathic treatment is reasonably safe for both mother and the baby.
Causes of vitiligo during pregnancy:
Vitiligo development is associated with Vitamin B12 deficiency, iron deficiency, and hormonal changes. During pregnancy, the deficiency of Vitamin B12 and Iron obviously increases. So there are more chances of developing vitiligo during pregnancy.
Same way emotional stress can also increase during pregnancy. This, in turn, increases the chances of developing vitiligo during pregnancy.

So this child may develop vitiligo in his life later. But it has no relation to the fact that his mother was suffering from vitiligo during pregnancy.

Should mothers having vitiligo avoid getting pregnant?
This is a very sensitive question which comes in the mind of vitiligo patients as well as their close family members. Dr. Rajesh Shah, MD, explains that mother suffering from vitiligo during pregnancy does not mean that she will transmit vitiligo to her baby. Nor is vitiligo infectious or contagious. There are other diseases like diabetes and psychological disorders and certain cancers which have high chances of passing on to the next generation but people are not scared of these diseases and such questions do not arise in their minds but as vitiligo is considered a taboo in India, people do think in such manner.
So, Dr Rajesh Shah points out that the vitiligo affected mothers should not avoid getting pregnant because of the fear of transmission of vitiligo to the baby.
In Dr Rajesh Shah’s opinion, more the level of acceptance of disease in the minds of pregnant mothers better is the chance of sailing through the pregnancy successfully.
